'Feminists Don't Wear Pink & Other Lies' by Scarlett Curtis - Book Review

Now, this is certainly a book that all females should be getting on board with! Produced by Scarlett Curtis, this collection of essays and stories are from a group of empowering women, exploring and discussing what feminism means to them. Some will take you on a rollercoaster of a ride, touching on heavy, intense emotions. Others which will have you howling your head off and some will be o deeply inspiring, you'll never want it to end.

Admittedly, this book has certainly taught me some valuable lessons that I can carry with me throughout my life, living as a young woman in today's society. It has taught me what being a feminist really is and in fact, this collection has proved that there is no right or wrong way of doing it.

It's not all about stomping through busy towns, pumped with raging anger protesting until someone hears us. It's not about having a deep hatred towards men and completely disregarding their gender and everything about them. It's much more than that.

(Although, I'm not dismissing that these things don't happen. I for one, have definitely had my moments of anger towards men, perhaps many moments...)

What I've taken from this book, is that being a feminist is having a firm belief in gender equality and advocating for it to become a societal norm; which really makes you pause for a minute and actually think. Why has gender equality always been an issue in society? And why are women still battling it?

As some of the stories are exceptionally personal, it has done nothing but highlight the immense bravery and heroism that these women carry. Their fortitude and courage are certainly recognisable throughout, which is what touched me the most. It is evident that those who have carried negative experiences throughout their lives, haven't allowed it to define them and has instead, culminated with them feeling like powerful women.

As a reader, I felt privileged to experience and learn about their feminist mindset, witnessing how they interpret the meaning of what it means to be a feminist; allowing me to understand the most significant aspects of the term for my own personal development. This powerful collection has provided a group of diverse women an opportunity to be open and honest, allowing them to find their voice, whilst encouraging other females to follow in their footsteps.
